Susan Shackelford

Brief Biography
A former sports writer for The Miami Herald and The Charlotte Observer, Susan co-wrote the book “Shattering the Glass: The Remarkable History of Women’s Basketball” with Pamela Grundy. They are preparing a new edition for UNC Press expected to publish in 2024.
Susan is a Phi Beta Kappa journalism major from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was the student newspaper’s first female sports editor (The Daily Tar Heel). Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, she has had her own writing and consulting business since 1982.
Apart from work, you’ll likely find her on the tennis court, walking her Plaza Midwood neighborhood or hiking with her spouse Melissa and their dog, Lucy. A native of Mebane, North Carolina, Susan graduated from Millbrook High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she was a co-captain of the girls’ basketball team.
